Mei Mei, A Daughter’s Song

As a special program for Asian Pacific American Heritage month, Dmae Roberts presents her 1990 Peabody award-winning documentary“Mei Mei, A Daughter’s Song This memoir docu-theatre piece is the personal story of cross-cultural and cross-generational conflict produced by Dmae Roberts.

“Mei Mei”chronicles Dmae and her mother, Chu-Yin, as they travel to Taiwan together.

Interviews and dramatizations weave in and out to tell the story of a conflicted daughter and a moth

er who suffered abuse, starvation and the horrors of World War Two. “Mei Mei has been broadcast on NPR, the BBC, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

In 1991, Dmae adapted the radio piece into a stage play at the Interstate Firehouse Cultural Center theatre in Portland.
